THEATER ON ANCIENT GREEK STAGES

November 17, 2025
10:00 am - 12:30 pm

The Cyclops” by Euripides (c. 400 BCE)

The Cyclops, written by Euripides around 408 BCE, is the only surviving example of an ancient Greek satyr play. It presents a burlesque retelling of the myth of Odysseus and the Cyclops Polyphemus, adapted from Book 9 of Homer’s Odyssey. The play explores themes of deception, language, and man's relationship with the gods, and it reflects Athenian identity and values.

The play is set in front of the cave of the Cyclops beneath Mount Etna in Sicily
