April 10: Southport Island with Jayne Gordon
Our first walk is near the mouth of the Sheepscot River. Southport, connected to Boothbay Harbor by a swing bridge, is a wonderful place to saunter in early spring. We will do two walks — a circular one near Hendricks Head, where we’ll picnic by the little beach, followed by a short one by Cozy Harbor to Pratts Island. Let’s discover why writer and environmentalist Rachel Carson made this part of Maine her summer home and field (well, tide-pool) study area.
Easy 1.5-mile walk and .5-mile walk on paved and dirt roads.
Jayne Gordonis the VP of Coastal Senior College, chair of the Activities Committee, a member of the Curriculum Committee, and teacher of courses on the intersection of landscape, local history, and literature.
