The Oceanography and Geography of Maine's Estuaries

About this event

Maine has dozens of estuaries — each one special. Their characters follow from the combination of their shapes, waters, life forms and human history. We will survey how geological forces shaped these mixing bowls; how waters from land and sea enter, bring stuff, and mix; and how humans and other critters respond. We will ask why certain areas have been, or will be, known for features such as marshes, ice, various fisheries, pollution, ports, and water power, among others. We focus on phenomena that can be observed without scientific instruments and described without equations. Weather and tide permitting, optional field lunches on the shore after class will let us see local examples of issues discussed in class.

Instructor Larry Mayer taught and did research in oceanography at the University of Maine for several decades. Oceanography was a good career fit because he likes to dabble among physics, chemistry, biology, and geology. This course derives, in part, from his many attempts to explain to his parents why he was getting paid to play in the mud.
