Joyce's Dubliners: Not a Collection but a Coherent Whole

About this event

Most readers encounter these stories individually, in anthologies and in isolation. Most readers encounter “Araby” and “The Dead” without the intervening stories as links or commentary. Joyce presents aspects of Dublin in all of them, but their commonality and narrative identities are closely interwoven, presenting a vision of much more than Dublin’s citizens in action. They speak together. However different the voices sound, their counterpoints are planned and mutually illuminating. Joyce was learning his craft as a novelist and conceived these tales as parts of a whole. Or so I will propose. We will read all of the stories as they comment on and complete one another, driving inexorably towards the final tale: “The Dead.”
