A lot of folks have had unfortunate experiences in math classes. They got confused, intimidated and finally decided that the effort wasn't really worth it. “It was just a bunch of formulas.” “It wasn't any fun.” “I never really understood why we were doing this stuff.” Do any of these statements sound familiar to you?

This class has some unexpected answers to those statements. We’re going to work and play with some basic algebraic concepts and find ways together to inspire appreciation and enjoyment of this lovely math tool. Bring your curiosity, your willingness to ask questions, and sometimes to be a little silly. You can bring a calculator if you wish.

Let’s take a while to discover why the ancient Algerians thought Algebra was so fascinating and useful. This class is designed to be fun. The secret is that we’ve been using Algebra since kindergarten to solve problems and to find answers to a myriad of questions. Let’s have fun together!

Instructor Rashi Nessen has degrees from Yale and Stanford, but he learned to have fun with Algebra while he was an elementary school math teacher at Bridge School in Middlebury, VT for 30 years. His greatest enjoyment was teaching beginning and more advanced students to approach Algebra with curiosity, creativity, and fun.
