LYSISTRATA” by Aristophanes (411 BCE)

The journey of the witty and determined LYSISTRATA through the play

A comic account of a woman's mission to end the Peloponnesian War between Greek city states, Lysistrata persuades the women of Athens deny all the men of the land any sex, which was said to be the only thing they truly and deeply desired. A sex strike proves to be the means of forcing the men to negotiate peace – a strategy that inflames the battle between the sexes. The play is notable for being an early exposé of sexual relations in a male-dominated society.
