How Does Music Work?

About this event

Before humans spoke, we sang with the birds, wind, water, and other sounds around us. Over millennia we have taken that simple, direct relationship and evolved it into symphonies and pop songs. How did we accomplish that?

How do we create and hear sounds? How do we transform songs into melodies and harmonies? How do we preserve those melodies for others to learn?

Bring your voice. Bring an instrument if you have one. Bring your curiosity. We’ll explore how music works and enjoy making music together.

This class may be taken by itself or along with “Singing Our Roots: Folk Songs from Many Cultures,” which is offered at the same location from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m.

Instructor Susan Borg sings and teaches music with folks of all ages. She is currently the Choir Director at the Midcoast Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and leader of Coastal Senior College’s monthly Any Body Can Sing activity. Susan’s classes are welcoming and active. After graduating from Middlebury College with a degree in Music, Susan sang briefly with the Chicago Lyric Opera and the Oakland Symphony Chorus. She sang for many years with the world music a cappella group WomenSing.
