Learning Differences and "Islands of Competency"
Caroline will describe the blessings and perceptual pitfalls of learning differences such as dyslexia and ADHD. Drawing on personal experiences (in the second grade her teacher made her stand in the wastepaper basket because her handwriting was still so crooked and her reading so slow), Caroline will describe the “islands of competency” that she and her dyslexic sons have relied on to persevere in life.
Reading Howard Gardner’s book
Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences
(eight different kinds, in fact) helped Caroline to realize she was not a complete dope
(even though her two SAT scores added up to 800!). After her literary agent quit, Caroline managed to sell four books and a play by herself. Each young-adult novel has a hero with a learning difference. As an educator, Caroline knows how important it is for kids to realize that just because they have trouble reading, writing, spelling, and remembering the math facts doesn’t mean they are not intelligent. Caroline has spoken nationally to fellow educators, parents, and school children about the importance of meeting learning challenges with resiliency, humor, and hope.
Presenter Caroline Davis Janover
is an award-winning author of four novels and a play for children and young adults. A winner of the New Jersey Governor's Outstanding Teacher Award, Caroline has spent her professional career in public and private school education. Caroline has dyslexia and has lectured nationally on the creative strengths and academic challenges of children who grow up with learning and attentional differences. She is currently working on a memoir.
