May 9: Darling Marine Center with Larry Mayer
We will walk a trail along Lowes Cove (intertidal) and discuss middens, brickyards, marshes, and clamming. We will come inland to see signs of agriculture-caused erosion, as well as the cellar hole of the original European settlers, then head down to the estuary shore and back to some picnic tables for lunch. The walk is about an hour.
Moderate trail hike; some steep sections
Larry Mayer was a professor at the Darling Marine Center (University of Maine). There, and at Coastal Senior College, he’s taught courses on marine ecosystems and their connection to human communities.
