Artist, educator, and curator Leith MacDonald shares stories about his research for the second edition of Island Inspiration, a catalogue of Monhegan art. Using rarely seen paintings from a private collection (which will be on display in Porter Hall) along with a slideshow, MacDonald will explore a variety of connections between the artists and their subjects on Maine's premier art colony.
MacDonald has spent a significant amount of time out on Monhegan creating work inspired by the island. After moving to Rockland in 2009, he worked as a member of the curatorial department at the Farnsworth Art Museum. Leith, in addition to working on his own artistic endeavors and archival projects, is currently on staff at the Wyeth Study Center. He also works with native clay as a ceramics facilitator at the Riley School.
The Monhegan Museum of Art and History will have copies of Island Inspiration available for purchase at the event. The 200-page catalogue was published in March 2022. It includes bios for 46 artists who painted on Monhegan between 1880 and 2000, with more than 100 essays and color photos of their works. The price of the catalogue is $60.00 payable by check or cash to the Monhegan Museum.
