June 17: Swan Island, Richmond *Note special time and charge! Ferrying charge: $20 Rain Date: June 18
Swan Island, at the head of Merrymeeting Bay, was once the site of the town of Perkins, which went out of existence in 1936. Of the 27 original buildings, 5 still stand. The 4-mile long island is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is now managed by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Using a self-guided brochure, we will walk down the old road in this ghost town past several abandoned homesteads to an area with picnic tables, an approximately 3-mile round trip.
*The state ferry service to Swan Island is no longer in operation. We have arranged transportation to the island with Captain Dave Cleaveland from the boat dock in Richmond. You must pay a non-refundable fee of $20 when you register to cover this service.
